Welcome
Monasterboice Inn was the home of Thomas, brother of General Patrick Sarsfield, at the time of the Battle of the Boyne. When the day was lost, Thomas's throat was cut, and so he died, in Shop Street, in Drogheda.
A 100 years later the patriot, Charles Hamilton Teeling, fleeing from capture in 1798, having swam the river Boyne on horseback, rode for succour to what was then the Monasterboice Inn in which you stand today. Engraved on a plaque on the outside of the Sarsfield room you can see the date 1786 and initials P.S.
